A £1m scheme to demolish the old school house, library, and a café on the site of the Methodist Church in Ipplepen to build a new multi-purpose community hub has been approved.

The plans had drawn the backing of the community, with letters of support saying it would be a welcome part of the village, would bring happiness to people, and that it would allow many more community services to take place.

Outlining the plans, the Ipplepen Methodist Church, say that the community building has become cramped and is not large enough to accommodate the community activities and facilities for the village.

The refurbishment of the church and the demolition and rebuilding of the hub and the library would cost around £1.1million.

Teignbridge District Council planners gave the scheme the go-ahead under delegated powers.

Approving the scheme, an officer report said: “The proposal meets the criteria as is required within the above policies, and offers public benefit to the community through the creation of a functional community hub.”

Documents submitted to the planners said: “The old school building and library to the rear and side of the church have long been used for community purposes. The library, which was housed in the old canteen building, was condemned to closure for health and safety reasons and facility were moved into the old school building, known as the Community Hub Café and Library. Consequently, the building is now cramped and not large enough to accommodate the community activities and facilities for the village.

“The cost plan showed that the replacement of the buildings was more cost effective and a new community hub would provide a compliant, inclusive, comfortable, flexible and up-to-date facility to serve the community and the church.”
